How to Check the USD Value of an NFT Sale in 3 Easy Steps Using Etherscan

July 8, 2022 - 3 min read

This article walks you through 3 easy steps to check the US dollar value of an NFT sale at the time the sale occurred. Because the price of Ether fluctuates and the fact that OpenSea does not show sales amounts in USD, it can be difficult to determine the USD price of an NFT at the time of the sale. This article will help you quickly solve that problem.

How to Check the USD Value of an NFT Sale in 3 Easy Steps Using Etherscan

ETH prices have been fluctuating a lot in 2022, going from a high of $3,262 on April 9th, 2022 all the way down to $998 on 6/18/2022.

When an NFT is sold, OpenSea shows the value of that sale in ETH, but because of price fluctuations, it’s hard to tell how much an asset sold in US dollars.

I’m going to walk you through how to check the USD value of an NFT at the time of its sales using Etherscan in 3 easy steps.

How to Check the USD Value of an NFT Sale in 3 Easy Steps Using Etherscan:

Step 1: Navigate to the NFT listing on OpenSea:

For this example, we are going to use the most expensive VeeFriends Series 2 NFT ever sold. The listing can be found here

Step 2: Click on the Date link associated with the sale:

Each date has a clickable link that will take you to Etherscan for the transaction details.

If an item has multiple sales, you can click on the link corresponding with that sale to view more information.

The Adaptable Alien sale is a good one to look at because it sold for 42 ETH at a time when the cryptocurrency was valued much higher than it is today.

Step 3: Scroll down to Value and click on the USD value hyperlink:

This section allows you to toggle between the current value of that ETH transaction, and the estimated value on the day of the transaction.

In this case, the 42 Ether was valued at approximately $123,332.58 USD at the time of the sale, but you can easily click that same link to see the current value of that Ether:

As you can see, that 42 ETH is currently worth $52,771.74 USD.

Closing Thoughts

It’s important to be able to look at what someone spent for an NFT in terms of USD relative to ETH before deciding to make your own NFT purchases.

This technique can help you find undervalued NFTs if ETH values are going up and down, and it makes you a more informed consumer.

Frankly, I did not know how to do this until I wrote an article listing the top 10 most expensive VeeFriends Series 2 sales and found it useful.

It takes 5 minutes to do the homework, but is oh-so-valuable and likely gives you an edge when doing research because this technique is not common knowledge.
