Breaking Down VeeFriends Series 2 - The Next Evolution of Gary Vaynerchuk's NFT Ecosystem

April 20, 2022 - 8 min read

This article breaks down Gary Vaynerchuk's VeeFriends Series 2 NFT project that follows on the heels of the successful Series 1 project. I break down what it is, how to get it, and some nuance about what is coming in the next few weeks so that you can prepare if you are interested in getting one.

Breaking Down VeeFriends Series 2 - The Next Evolution of Gary Vaynerchuk's NFT Ecosystem

Introduction and Quick Links

A little over a year ago, Gary Vaynerchuk’s VeeFriends NFT project hit the open market and since then, it’s done $151 million in sales volume (50,400 ETH), becoming one of the top projects in the space.

In that same time period, Gary and his team have done a lot, including:

VeeFriends Mini NFT Drops that featured collaborations with big-time artists like Drift, PopWonder, and Danny Cole

Putting together an A-list of web3 speakers and entertainers (Snoop Dogg, Pharrell, Spike Lee, Mila Kunis, and many, many others) for their upcoming conference, VeeCon, with tickets distributed as NFTs featuring art from SnoFro (Chromie Squiggles on Art Blocks).

Partnering with Mattel to release a VeeFriends UNO set with collectible cards.

Partnering with zerocool to release a premium VeeFriends collectible trading card set

Sitting courtside with holders of NFT access tokens (and playing tennis with them, joining their podcast, FaceTiming them, etc.)

Launching a 125,000 token NFT project called Book Games, which turned into a currency for the VeeFriends ecosystem, and next up, we have VeeFriends Series 2.

Partnering with Metarelics to offer collectors the opportunity to get a high-quality physical print of VeeFriends artwork.

Building a positive and supportive community. While the term "community" is overused in this space, Gary and his team and truly shaping the VeeFriends group into a connected community.

A lot has been done, and Gary has continually said we’re in the first few minutes of what will be a decades-long project.

Series 2 is the next major installment of VeeFriends Series 2, which is currently minting (.335 ETH plus gas) for Friends List followed by a public mint on April 25th.

We’re going to dive into the project — what it is, how to get them, and some new aspects including 15 new characters and an Emerald Spectacular rare token.

What is VeeFriends Series 2?

VeeFriends Series 2 is 55,555 NFTs from project creator Gary Vaynerchuk.

The project will feature the 236 characters from VeeFriends Series 1 and 15 new characters

Each character in VeeFriends Series 2 will have 220 NFTs.

Of those, 214 will be 1/1s that utilize different poses and backgrounds, and 6 will be Specatular 1/1s (Bubble Gum, Diamond, Hologram, Gold, Lava, and Emerald).

The art is also evolution and takes Gary’s from-the-heart hand-drawn Series 1 characters and breathes a cartoonist life into them:

Gary has said that he intends to build his version of Disney with this IP and VeeFriends Series 2 is a massive step in that direction.

The evolving pose token from the project (gifted to series 1 holders) captures this by showing the original Series 1 art in the Series 2 NFT:

Those of us who have been around VeeFriends for nearly a year know how cool it is to see the original art featured in the NFT as well as how well the art has been done for series 2.

To get a taste of what the new art sets up for the project and a hint at its future, check out this short video clip (sound off if you do NOT want a song stuck in your head for the next few hours):

Is the 55,555 VeeFriends Series Supply Too High?

Before we go any further, let’s address this question as it is the most common knee-jerk reaction to the project.

If you’re here, it’s likely that you are new to the VeeFriends ecosystem (welcome!).

Gary has repeatedly said that demand is more important than supply, and even went as far as to say that the demand is the supply.

No one knows what the market will do, but so far after 20,000 tokens in the project were minted during the Friends List mint, the price has hovered around 1 ETH.

If you like what Gary does and believe he can create demand for the characters in his VeeFriends ecosystem, then the supply doesn’t really matter.

His book games NFT project with 125,000 assets peaked at 0.5 ETH and while Series 2 is purely a collectible NFT, never say never on added utility after the fact.

My short answer is, no the supply of this project is not too big. There are far worse 10k projects that don’t deliver and we’ll likely see consolidation toward the leaders in the space.

The size of this project is hopefully an opportunity for those who can’t afford Series 1 and it's likely to have a much larger network effect.

What’s Upcoming for VeeFriends Series 2

If you plan to acquire a VeeFriends Series 2 from any of the below options, you will need to convert your US dollars (or other currency into ETH). I have been using Coinbase since the start of my NFT journey and highly recommend it for beginners. I've trusted it with a large number of transactions and you will want to sign-up ASAP as it can take a few days for the transfer. You can do that here. The friend's list mint is currently happening and the team did a phenomenal job of keeping gas fees low.

Minting is done on the VeeFriends website which prevents interactions with the contract (botting, etc.) and keeps gas fees extremely low.

It’s too late to get on the VeeFriends Series 2 friends list, but there are plenty for sale on the secondary market

There will be a public mint on April 25th, so if you don’t want to go for secondary, you may want to go for that (.335 ETH plus gas fees).

You can also still buy Book Games tokens (we did a tutorial here on how to do that here) to participate in the raffle for new characters:

This is a sneaky play as most Book Games have dropped to about .2 ETH. Most of the above requirements are 1 ETH for a chance to mint a new character from the project.

Remember, this is a gamble, you aren’t guaranteed a spot to mint, but you can use this handy table here to see the odds of being able to burn for a new character.

I expect to see some action on Book Games after the public mint as these 15 characters and the 90 spectaculars for those characters are burned 24 hours at a time after the public mint.

There will also be an auction on 4/25 for 55 hours to get one of 235 Emerald Spectaculars in the Series 2 set:

To recap, you have a few options to get a VeeFriends Series 2:

(1) Buy on the secondary market

(2) Mint on the 25th during public mint

(3) Acquire the appropriate book games tokens to enter a raffle for new characters

(4) Bid on Emerald Series 2 specs at auction on April 25th

The VeeFriends Series 2 Collectible Card Game

One small detail that isn’t being talked about enough is that the people who won a Friends list spot (or Series 1 claims) were given the option to claim a free box of the VeeFriends Series 2 Collectible Trading Card Game, created in partnership with zero cool.

zero cool premium VeeFriends trading cards rocketed to $15,000 per box before settling at around $6,000 and even has auctions for specific cards live on one of the leading sports card auction houses, Goldin.co.

This trading card game will feature cards that act as part of a playable game, but also include inserts that feature Series 1 cards with their original artwork and 1/1 hand-signed autograph cards for 250 characters:

The VeeFriends universe is quickly expanding and Series 2 is a pivotal project that helps progress toward Gary’s original vision.

Conclusion

There’s a lot happening with VeeFriends Series 2 and I hope this summary helps you clear it up and plan how you’ll get your hands on one if that is what will make you happy.

The coming weeks will be fascinating to watch — a public mint, auctions for rare Spectaculars, a raffle and burn for new characters, and the secondary market.

Gary has made it clear that this is a 40–50 year project, so if it is something you can’t afford, please don’t overextend yourself.

The project isn’t going anywhere and is only just getting started.
